There’s been a lot of talk on these Newsletters in the last year or so about different ways to maximize the utility of the apps and websites on the Bottlecapps’ platform. Whether it be SEO, Delivery, Ad Campaigns, Instacart Marketplace, DoorDash Marketplace, Shipping . . . the list goes on and on. Don’t misinterpret anything here, all those things bring serious value and deserve discussion.
However, something gets lost in the conversation about all these clever ways to make an ecommerce platform that better serves retailers…a little something called PICKUP orders (Curbside or In-store) 🛍️
In an effort to modernize the way we engage with customers, we sometimes miss the true power of the most basic, fundamental things – things that are truly vital to the success of our collective businesses. That’s why the classic Pickup Order is the theme of this month’s Watering Hole.
Let’s start with a couple cold hard facts about Pickup Orders:
- Of the hundreds of thousands of individual orders that have been placed with Bottlecapps’ stores in the U.S. and Canada in 2023, 91% have been Pickup Orders.
- Of the tens of millions of dollars’ worth of orders that have been processed on Bottlecapps platform in 2023,64% have been Pickup Orders.
That should tell you something. And these Pickup Orders aren’t exactly exclusive to the states that prohibit delivery. It’s true in virtually every state irrespective of local laws.
In case you need more evidence of the buying habits of alcohol shoppers, the following stores (all of whom are elite in terms of their overall sales volume in the ecommerce space) have an order history comprised of at least 50% Pickup Orders:
- Superior Liquor – Colorado (over 98% Pickup)

- S&W Liquor – Maryland (100% Pickup)

- Davidsons Beer Wine & Spirits – Colorado (over 58% Pickup)
We are talking about the best of the best here, and three of the four stores listed above are in Colorado with almost zero restrictions on delivery of alcohol. That means that given the opportunity, these shoppers are willfully choosing to select Pickup as their preferred method of transaction when other options are available.
As we get closer and closer to the biggest drinking season of the year, we strongly encourage store owners to take advantage of these purchasing habits. It sounds simple, and that’s because it is. You don’t need to stress if you don’t quite have the infrastructure for delivery in place. Believe it or not, most customers actually prefer placing their orders in the app or website and then physically coming to the store to pick it up – statistically speaking, across all retail ecommerce, 97% of online shoppers also shop in-store.
Therefore, it goes without saying, then, that there should absolutely be more of an emphasis on creating an excellent experience for these Pickup Order customers. It should be easy and seamless. Top tier stores tend to create value where possible by giving the customer a chance to skip the line and avoid all the traffic. That’s a huge selling point, especially during the upcoming holidays. In addition, when other customers (the ones that haven’t yet tried the app or website) see first-hand how great the online experience is, what do you think will happen? They’ll start doing the same thing, that’s what!
This is called social proof, and it’s as effective as any advertising out there. The key to success isn’t complicated. Promote the benefits of the platform rather than the platform itself and watch what happens.

Band-Aid, Kleenex, Uber, etc. – some brands are synonymous with a category, while all others have to work at it a bit harder. In Bev Alc, that’s where Bottlecapps’ targeted digital tactics come in to play, providing share of voice for brands through aimed messaging when and where consumers are shopping 🛍️

Upcoming Sponsored Brands – December 2023

As Thanksgiving approaches, the booze industry witnesses a substantial surge in sales, painting a vivid picture of the holiday’s cultural significance.
Here is a snapshot of the percentage increase across the Bottlecapps network in 2022, which we anticipate will be an indication of spiked holiday sales this year as well…
According to recent statistics, wine sales experience the largest uptick during the Thanksgiving season, with an average increase of nearly 20% compared to the rest of the year. This surge can be attributed to the festive nature of Thanksgiving gatherings, where wine becomes an integral part of the celebratory experience. Red wines, in particular, tend to dominate the market during this period, accounting for nearly 60% of the overall increase in sales. The statistics reflect not only a preference for the rich, robust flavors that complement traditional Thanksgiving fare but also underscore the cultural and social importance of wine as a centerpiece in bringing people together during this heartfelt occasion.
